Our Management Team
Andrew Allen is a qualified chartered accountant who has spent the last twenty years as owner/manager of a range of healthcare businesses. Three of these businesses were backed by private equity, and realised returns upon exit well in excess of 30% p.a. for investors.
Andrew co-founded Vanguard in 2002 and, between 2005 and 2008, was a main board director at Nuffield Health where, in addition for being responsible for Vanguard, he was charged with the modernising and revitalisation of Nuffield’s diagnostic division. Following a management buyout from Nuffield Health in April 2009, Andrew became Non Executive Chairman of Vanguard Healthcare.
Mary Smallbone is a qualified theatre nurse, but has spent the majority of her career working in sales, including a period with Smith and Nephew. She is a Chartered Marketer, with a sterling record for national and international business growth.
Mary joined Vanguard in 2003 as Sales Director. In 2007, she took on the role of Marketing and Operations Director, responsible for clinical and corporate governance and the day-to-day running of Vanguard’s staff and the fleet of mobile units.
In 2015, marking Vanguard's focus on continental healthcare, Mary was appointed the Managing Director for Europe. She is currently responsible for overseeing Vanguard's growth in the European health market; drawing on her wealth of experience in sales, marketing and operations for the company.
Mark Spoors specialises in finance within the healthcare industry as an Associate Chartered Accountant with ten years experience in healthcare.
Mark has worked in a variety of roles – prior to joining Vanguard in 2010, he worked as Financial Director for Robinia, a provider of residential care for people with learning difficulties. Prior to that, Mark held FD roles at Clinovia (now BUPA Home Healthcare) and for two divisions of Nestor Healthcare Group.
Steve has worked within the acute hospital sector for 25 years, latterly as Chief Executive and Executive Director in large acute/specialist teaching hospitals. His Board level experience extends over a 10-year period. Steve has been part of or led teams delivering major clinical service reconfiguration within a number of acute hospitals. Steve joined the Vanguard team in an advisory capacity in October 2013 and focuses upon identifying and creating longer term delivery partnerships.
In April 2015, Steve was appointed Sales and Business Development Director. As well as continuing to cultivate long term partnerships, Steve is now pioneering Vanguard's community based healthcare projects.
Oliver Law joined Vanguard Healthcare in 2015 as an established senior business leader. With over twelve years’ experience in the medical devices industry, eight of which being at board level, Oliver has spent much of his career restructuring, growing and reinvigorating businesses.
Prior to joining Vanguard, Oliver held several management positions in the medical device industry, starting his medical device career at Karl Storz Endoscopy. From this, Oliver moved to Stryker, where he assumed responsibility for Stryker’s UK Endoscopy business, rebuilding and growing it substantially during his time. Oliver was then headhunted by Trumpf in 2008, joining them initially as Director of Sales & Marketing, and being promoted to Managing Director in 2009, where he assumed full responsibility for their UK operation. During this time, Oliver reshaped the UK business, introducing multiple new revenue streams including service, installation and consultancy. More recently, Oliver’s role at Trumpf expanded further, where he was also responsible for introducing new Trumpf products into European markets.
Scott Pells joined Vanguard Healthcare Solutions in 2016 as an established business professional. Scott possesses an array of experience within the healthcare sector, where he has worked within a number of professional capacities. Scott’s wealth of industry knowledge has built from his experience of healthcare consultancy as well as leading sales and marketing teams.
Working within the healthcare sector exclusively since 2007, Scott has worked with the NHS, the private hospital sector, financial institutions looking to invest in the UK health sector and medical device companies and clinical staffing businesses.
Angela Dillon is a Fellow Chartered Certified Accountant (FCCA). Angela was promoted to the position of Financial Controller after joining us in 2010 as a Commercial Accountant.
Angela took on her first role in accountancy with Robson Taylor in 1997, starting in incomplete records and audit. After 3 years at the firm Angela joined Berkeley Hamilton, another chartered accountancy firm, where she developed to Audit senior. While working for these firms Angela achieved both her AAT and ACCA qualifications. Once qualified, and keen to make the move from practise to industry, Angela joined The Little Entertainment Group, a children’s television production company, as their Financial Controller for 6 years before joining Vanguard.
Laura is a practised HR and recruitment specialist, bringing with her nearly a decade of industry experience predominantly gained in the highly competitive Aerospace Engineering sector.
Prior to joining Vanguard Laura was HR Project Specialist for Messier-Bugatti-Dowty.
Laura leads the recruitment, engagement and organisational development of Vanguard's clinical teams.
Glen Suttenwood has more than 28 years experience in the transport industry, responsible for large vehicles, bulk materials and surgical facilities.
Previously to Vanguard, Glen completed a five year apprenticeship as an HGV Vehicle Technician, where he repaired military vehicles and field equipment, before becoming an LGV 1 driver for 15 years with Handbury Davies and R T Steward Transport. Glen joined Vanguard in 2006 and is responsible for the planning and transportation of Vanguard’s mobile operating units throughout the UK, Europe and even further afield. Glen maintains Vanguard’s compliance to its operating licence, manages the day to day relationship with ASGB – who are responsible for manufacturing the units – and also Quest for maintenance of the fleet.
Wayne Simpson has over 20 years experience in building relationships through his career in supply chain management. Starting at Fileder Filter Systems in Maidstone where he spent 9 years with the process filtration & water treatment specialists. Then joining HPC Engineering in Sussex where he spent 7 years helping them re-structure all aspects of the supply-chain, here one of his clients was Varian Medical Systems & their Oncology & Imaging Division near Gatwick Airport. He has also worked directly with companies such as Pfizer & Dyson in his capacity as a consultant.
Wayne joined Vanguard in June 2015 as Senior Account Manager for the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Simon Squirrell joined Vanguard in 2017 as an experienced sales manager. Having worked at Jones & Brooks, specialist printer to the NHS, he has supplied specialist print solutions to the NHS across the UK for more than eleven years.
Simon has gained experience selling a portfolio of products covering a wide spectrum of hospital departments, from pathology labs to A&E.
Simon Conroy has over a decade of experience in sales for the healthcare sector. He began working in sales for the NHS in 1999 for hospital furniture manufacturer Craven & Co Ltd, where he was responsible for sales throughout the UK. In 2007, Simon moved to Sunlight Clinical Solutions, one of the UK's leading producers of single use instruments and medical consumables.
Simon joined Vanguard Healthcare in January 2010 as Senior Account Manager in charge of sales for the South.
Our Clinical Managers
Pamela Bennett has had a distinguished career handling both marketing and general operations for a number of healthcare providers.
Born in Canada, Pam began her career as Marketing Manager of Bath Clinic in 1984, where she remained for ten years, latterly as Group Marketing Manager for Compass Healthcare. Since leaving Compass, Pam held various managerial roles with providers such as Bupa and Virgin Healthcare before joining Vanguard in 2008 as Operations Manager.
Scott Horsley began training as an Operating Department Practitioner for the Army at the age of 16 - a job that he remained in for 9 years, serving in Germany, the Falklands, Ireland and during the first Gulf War.
Following 5 years as a locum ODP, Scott joined Cardinal Healthcare as an ODP in 2002, less than two months before it became Vanguard Healthcare. Scott has been a Clinical Contracts Manager since 2005.
Norma Davies qualified as a nurse in Northern Ireland and spent the following 36 years working for the NHS in Plymouth, joining Derriford Hospital in 1975 and leaving as a senior staff nurse in January 2001.
After leaving the NHS, Norma semi-retired with her husband to a holiday home in Britanny, France, but, missing her job, she returned to full time work, joining the Vanguard team as a theatre crew member in 2004. Norma became a Clinical Contracts Manager in 2007.
Before beginning his clinical career, retraining as an Operating Department Practitioner in 2003, Steve spent 15 years in the military serving in Germany, Kosovo, Northern Ireland and during the first Gulf War.
Steve held his first role as an ODP at Whiston Hospital, Merseyside, in 2006 before joining Vanguard three years later. Steve quickly became a lead practitioner, heading Vanguard’s clinical teams on site. Steve became a Clinical Contracts Manager in 2015.
